Biology is the branch of the natural sciences that studies living organisms and how they interact with each other and the environment. On a smaller scale, biology can refer to the study of the internal structure of a living organism and how its constituent parts function and interact with each other and with the entire organism. A broader subset of biology includes ecology and the study of how an organism interacts with its surrounding environment. Ecology also looks at large sections a populations of various organisms to see how they form an ecosystem. Biology is often highly specialized, focusing on one particular body system, species, or ecosystem. Biological study is closely related to medicine and natural history.
